Word Study  October Update

Team Yellow Suffixes is studying the changing that occur when you add the "shun" suffix to different base words.  So far, we've discovered the following rules:

*base ends in -it, then you drop the -t and add -ssion
*base ends in -de, then you drop the -de and add -sion
*base ends in -ct, then you just add -ion to get the derived word
*base ends in -ss, then you just add -ion to get the derived word
*base ends in -t, then you just add -ion to get the derived word
*base ends in -ic, then you just add -ian to to get the derived word

Team Blue Roots have been studying how word roots give clues to word meanings.  We've looked at the following roots:

*auto     *bio     *geo     *graph     *meter     *peri     *phon     *photo     *tele
*scope     *thermal     *ology     *mono     *bi     *tri

Can you uncover the meaning of these roots?  Can you think of words that contain this Latin & Greek roots?

Word Study  Late September Update

Miss Mitton's word study class is learning how to prepare for weekly Word Study assessment.  Our first set of words compare -tion and -cian suffixes, which both make the /shun/ sound.  We're analyzing why some words get the -tion suffix and some get the -cian suffix.  For our weekly test, the kids will be given a definition and asked to spell the matching word correctly.  That means they'll need to know how to spell the word, and what the word means.
